The world is paved over, built up. The
sky is filled with smog. There are no more
trees, no more stars. Even the animals are
killing themselves.
And four young people are caught in the
downward spiral.
Winner of the 2004 Wal Cherry Award, VIEW OF CONCRETE is an acerbic and witty look at the
now. Young Victorian, Gareth Ellis, draws a picture of a present where nothing grows, nothing
survives. Into this lifeless world four strange characters are thrown, each with their own unique
escapism.
At times hilarious, at others darkly tragic, Ellis’ writing is always beautifully poetic,
creating poignant images of desperate people that are guaranteed to haunt. Brought to life by a
young team of theatre professionals and designers, this South Australian premiere is a raw mix of
hunger and humour that will shatter the modern image of urbanity.
